Get Unflinching Love...Adopt A Pet!

Pet Care is Parenting, Not a Hobby.

In a world driven by trends, cuteness, and quick dopamine hits, pet ownership often begins with a spontaneous decision; a child insists on a puppy, a friend gifts a kitten, or someone watches a viral reel of a talking parrot. And just like that, a life is brought home.

But let me state this plainly: bringing home a pet is not a trend or a toy; it is a lifelong commitment, a role no less significant than parenting.

A Pet is Not a Weekend Project:

In my veterinary experience spanning over three decades, I have treated thousands of animals, but more than that; I’ve seen human behavior toward animals in all its forms: compassionate, careless, and, at times, cruel.

Many people believe they are doing a great service by adopting or buying a pet. But what follows often reveals the truth. Puppies are kept chained for hours, birds are locked in cages for a lifetime, and cats are thrown out when they scratch furniture. If that sounds harsh, it’s because it is.

Love without responsibility is not love; it’s negligence wrapped in good intentions.

The Basics of Responsible Pet Parenting:

Before you bring a pet into your life, ask yourself these tough but necessary questions:

  • Can I commit to caring for this life for the next 10 to 15 years?
  • Am I willing to give my time; every day; for walks, grooming, emotional bonding, and medical care?
  • Do I have the patience for behavioral changes, accidents, or illnesses?

If the answer to any of these is “maybe,” then pause. Reconsider. Because pets are not decorative; they are dependents.

Once a pet becomes part of your life, start early:

  • Begin obedience training by 3 months of age.
  • Stick to a regular vaccination and deworming schedule.
  • Prioritize socialization; a well-socialized pet is confident, calm, and far less likely to develop behavioral issues.
  • Provide mental stimulation; playtime, interaction, and affection are just as important as feeding.

Choosing the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle:

Another common mistake I see is choosing a pet based on appearance or social media trends.

Take, for instance, Huskies; a majestic breed, but one that thrives in sub-zero climates. In Indian summers, their health deteriorates rapidly unless special arrangements are made. Labradors are adorable and loving but tend to gain weight easily if not exercised daily.

And then there are our very own Indian native breeds; Indies.
They are incredibly loyal, naturally hardy, low-maintenance, and deeply bonded with their human families when given a chance. I have personally trained and bred several guard breeds, but my recommendation; based on wisdom, not fashion; is to adopt Indies. They just need proper basic training from 3 months onward.

Pet Care is a Lifelong Journey:

Pets do not ask for much; food, shelter, love, attention, and respect. But in return, they give us loyalty that is unmatched, comfort that is healing, and companionship that asks for nothing.

So the next time someone says, “Oh, I love dogs,” I ask:
“Do you love them enough to wake up at 6 AM for a walk, to clean up their mess when they’re sick, to spend a weekend at home because your pet is anxious?”

Because true love for animals shows in responsibility, not in a selfie or a festive costume.

Final Thoughts

A pet is not a hobby; it is a heartbeat that walks beside you.
It is a child who will never grow old enough to become independent. When you accept that reality, and embrace it, only then do you deserve the unconditional love a pet gives you.

Let us not adopt out of impulse but out of preparedness.
Let us not treat animals as a source of entertainment but as sentient lives that feel fear, love, abandonment, and joy.

Let us parent, not possess.
